A Patient Story: Asthma

Dear Fellow Pennsylvanians,

It’s well known that Jerome Bettis, the recently retired running back for Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, manages his asthma to lead a physically active life. While Mr. Bettis’ accomplishments on the football field are hard to duplicate, most asthma sufferers can easily match his example of an active lifestyle.

Asthma is commonly associated with attacks of heavy wheezing and shortness of breath. Many of my patients have more subtle symptoms, like frequent coughing or chest congestion, that are triggered by illness or physical exercise or other triggers. Most asthma symptoms, whether mild or severe, can be managed.

If you have asthma, there’s no need to avoid activities you enjoy. Proper medication and a good management plan should allow people of all ages to lead active and productive lives. I applaud the Pennsylvania Medical Society for its efforts to educate patients about good asthma management. In addition, I encourage anyone with breathing problems to discuss the symptoms with your doctor. You may be pleasantly surprised how a good management plan can enhance your quality of life.
